Water Kefir 101

Come out for this weeks amazing class on how to make your own water Kefir. This week’s teacher is Suzie Lanphear Bledsoe. Water Kefir is a lacto – fermented probiotic, dairy free and gluten free beverage – Water kefir grains are not grains (like rice, rye or wheat) but a colony of yeast & good bacteria. We feed the grains sugar water and they eat the sugar and turn it into a carbonated drink by producing lactic acid, alcohol (typically less than 1%) and carbon dioxide.

Water Kefir is an easy way to add probiotics to your system. It will boost your immune system and is a great way to kick a soda or juice habit. Yogurt contains 2-10 strains of bacteria; kefir contains 10-30 strains of good bacteria along with beneficial yeast strains. Dr Axe states that, “Kefir bacteria can actually attach to the walls and colonize to stay and regulate. They’re also aggressive in nature and can actually go out and attack pathogens and bad bacteria in your gut.”
